TikTok Shop tips for affiliate videos

Twelve rules from holding the product constant: the same products, their best and worst videos side by side, so the only difference is the creative.

Old way vs new way

The 12 rules

  1. Open mid-scene. Frame one is something happening: the product mid-use, a person reacting, a muddy car.
  2. Hook on a person or a moment, not the product's attributes.
  3. Prove it within five seconds. Show the change happen.
  4. One specific number: a price, a time, a count.
  5. Look like content. Skits, memes, a candid rant. A polished flat lay reads as an ad.
  6. Use a voice or a story, not music over a slideshow.
  7. Something new every 3 to 6 seconds.
  8. Say the CTA once, near the end, with a reason to act now.
  9. Say "orange cart", TikTok's own words, never "link in bio" for a shop product.
  10. Hook text in the top-middle third, clear of the bottom fifth where the caption and cart sit.
  11. Post several formats per product and keep the winners. See how many videos per product.
  12. Keep claims typical, especially for skincare and supplements, and never invent a sale.

The first frame decides

From our study of 43 US TikTok Shop affiliate videos (October 2026). Views are public counts, not sales.

Having the product on screen early isn't the rule. Having something happen is. 15 of the 23 videos above 5M views had the product in frame by one second, but in use, not posed.

What to keep out of your videos

Do
  • Typical results: "feels softer after a week".
  • Real prices with "right now".
  • TikTok's commercial content setting on gifted or paid posts.
Skip
  • "Cures", "treats", "guaranteed".
  • Invented scarcity or a sale that isn't on.
  • "I paid full price" if you didn't.

Questions

What's the single most important TikTok Shop tip?

Open on something happening. The first frame separated winners from losers more than anything else in our study.

Do I need a big following for TikTok Shop videos to work?

Ten videos above 5M views in our study came from accounts under 20K followers. The hook decided, not the audience.

Should I post the same video twice?

Post a new version with a different hook or format instead. Our AI makes those from the same link.
